Here you can see the use of spray and board foam as air sealing products. Sealing up certain components that leak conditioned air into the attic, essentially an outdoor portion of the house, can drastically reduce overall air leakage. It is the necessary first step before re-insulating a home in an energy upgrade since insulation does nothing to combat air leakage; insulation’s efficacy is greatly reduced when air travels through it. Once the sealing is complete, we like to blow thick layers of cellulose overtop the attic ceiling, meeting the most stringent energy requirements. When doing deep energy upgrades, we often cut air leakage by 50% and increase insulation values threefold.
